Description

1868 Five Cent Planchet in Copper
Oversized Planchet, Reeded Edge
Judd-628, PR64 Red and Brown

1868 5C Five Cents, Judd-628, Pollock-697, High R.7, PR64 Red and Brown PCGS. The obverse shows the head of Liberty similar to the three cent nickel, only larger. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is around the border and the date 1868 is below. The reverse has 5 CENTS in the center encircled by a laurel wreath, and IN GOD WE TRUST at the top in very small letters. Struck on a broad copper planchet with a reeded edge. This is a rare and infrequently offered copper striking. The last offering we show in our Auction Archives (and the last offering listed in the Judd book also) is from our 2004 ANA Sale. We show only five auction appearances since 1990 by all the major auction companies. The Red and Brown designation is accurate, but there is significant mint red remaining on each side as well as yellowish-tinged green-brown. The fields are brightly mirrored with fine die striations on each side. An exceptionally well-preserved example of this overlooked rarity.
