Description

1868 Ten Cent, Gem Proof
Judd-647, Nickel, Plain Edge

1868 10C Ten Cents, Judd-647, Pollock-720, Low R.6, PR65 NGC. CAC. The obverse features the almost identical design used on large cents from 1843 to 1857. The reverse is similar to the large cent design except the wreath is smaller and open, and TEN CENTS appears in its center. Struck in nickel with a plain edge. The obverse die was also used to strike large cent patterns in 1868, an unlikely return of the long-dormant denomination. The present tan-brown example displays minor carbon across unabraded, satiny surfaces. Census: 5 in 65, 5 finer (6/15).
