Description

Conditionally Scarce Gem 1923 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle

1923 $20 MS65 PCGS. Despite a limited original mintage of 566,000 pieces, the 1923 has long been recognized as one of the more common Saint-Gaudens double eagles. Such an assessment is misplaced for coins that grade finer than MS63. Near-Gem survivors are scarce, and those that grade MS65, or higher, are downright rare. This is a beautiful Gem with rich reddish-gold color evenly distributed over both sides. The otherwise sharp strike wanes ever so slightly at the lower left obverse border--a not uncommon feature for the issue--and rich mint frost shimmers as the surfaces rotate under the light. Free of all but a few small, well scattered abrasions.
