Description

1855/54 Half Dollar Rarity, MS65 NGC

1855/54 50C Arrows MS65 NGC. FS-005, WB-102. There are actually three distinct die marriages of the 1855/54 Seated Half, two of which are known in business strike format while the third has only been confirmed on proofs. Wiley and Bugert (1993) assign this overdate a low R.7 rating in Mint State, and the two major certification services report just 13 coins in grades that range from MS60 through MS66 (2/03). This is an intermediate die state that still retains bold definition on the 5 and 4 underdigits. The top curve of the 8 underdigit, which shows in early die states, is virtually gone. Both sides are devoid of toning with a bright, silver-white sheen. The strike is sharp in most areas, but it does soften toward the upper obverse border and on the reverse over the eagle's left (facing) leg feathers and talon. A few small ticks in the upper reverse field are not out of context with the Gem grade. We have only sold one Gem quality 1855/54 Arrows Half at public auction, and that is the MS66 PCGS example that brought $17,250 as lot 7800 in our FUN Signature Sale two and a half years ago.
