1856 Half Cent in Copper-Nickel
Judd-177, PR65
One of Only Two Half Cent Patterns Produced

1856 E1/2C Half Cent, Judd-177, Pollock-205, R.5, PR65 PCGS. 70.7 grains. 88.8% copper, 8.1% nickel, 3.1% zinc. Regular dies for the Braided Hair half cent, struck in copper-nickel with a plain edge. These metallurgical trial strikes were produced in anticipation of the Flying Eagle small cents that began production the same year. Two variants are known of this metallurgical strike: one in 80 / 20 proportion of copper / nickel, the other a 90 /10 proportion. This is one of only two pattern half cents. The surfaces are deep cherry-red with light accents of blue, and the fields are nicely reflective.
