Description

1976 Assay Commission Medal. MS65 Uncertified. Julian AC-120, R.7. Pewter, 75.6 x 59.4 mm. oval, 2,355.0 grains. and a 1977 Assay Commission Medal. MS65 Uncertified. Julian AC-120, R.2. Pewter, 75.7 x 59.4 mm. oval, 1,879.7 grains.
The 1976 medal is autographed by designer Frank Gasparro, who engraved his autograph directly onto the medal. We are aware of only one other similarly engraved 1976 medal. This piece is accompanied by a letter from Senator Mark O. Hatfield, who received the medal while serving on the Assay Commission. The 1976 medal shows a facing portrait of Treasury Secretary William E. Simon, and also identifies Mary Brooks as Director of the Mint. Above is the legend ANNUAL ASSAY COMMISSION. The reverse has INDEPENDENCE BICENTENNIAL 1776-1976 across the top with a scene of Washington crossing the Delaware, which is identified below.
The 1977 medal is the only Assay Medal available to the public, and it is also the final entry in the series. The 1977 medal has ANNUAL ASSAY COMMISSION at the top of the obverse with a profile of Martha Washington facing right, 1977 to the left and her name to the right. The reverse has a front view of the first Mint, with FIRST UNITED STATES MINT 1792 above, and PHILADELPHIA below. Both of these medals are light gray in color and essentially as struck.
