Low Mintage 1927-S Standing Liberty Quarter, MS 64 Full Head PCGS
1927-S 25C MS 64 Full Head PCGS. Despite the indelible imprint that they left on American society, the Roaring Twenties had largely shot their bolt by 1927. Through the end of 1926, stock prices had continued to rise in response to legitimate profit within the United States' economy. From 1927 through the crash of 1929, however, prices on the Stock Exchange soared on pure speculation. This was not the only harbinger of Black Tuesday (October 29, 1929) and its aftermath. By 1927, residential construction and automobile production had nearly matched consumer demand and the time when companies would be forced to downsize was clearly in sight. The shrinking economy also manifested itself in 1927's depressed mintages for branch mint Standing Liberty quarter deliveries. Despite these and other warnings, however, the ballyhoo lifestyle of the '20s died hard. Investors, producers, and consumers all continued to live in a fantasy world until the stock market crumbled in October, 1929.Mint State 1927-S quarters that display Full Head definition are figments of most collectors' imaginations. For advanced specialists who would prefer to anchor their feet on more solid ground than, say, investors of the late 1920s, this lot offers proof that aesthetically pleasing representatives of this S-mint delivery do exist in today's numismatic marketplace. Save for isolated areas of Liberty's gown and the shield, every last detail rises powerfully above the lustrous surfaces. Pleasing rose-wine iridescence decorates both sides and deepens somewhat to charcoal hues in isolated peripheral areas. A few wispy abrasions on Liberty's face and neck rule out a higher grade assessment, although the overall eye appeal would easily support a full Gem designation. NGC and PCGS combined report only 15 Full Head examples in grades that range from AU 58 through MS 66. Of this total, 10 pieces grade MS 64 with 4 finer (9/99). An undeniable rarity and a piece that no advanced assembly of Standing Liberty quarters can do without.
