Description
1795 Half Eagle, AU Details
Rare BD-8, Small Eagle
1795 $5 Small Eagle, BD-8, High R.5 -- Repaired -- NGC Details.
AU. Ex: Hilt Collection. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/a. BD-8
is a rare 1795 half eagle variety, with only 30 to 40 examples
believed known in all grades. The obverse die is seen here in its
first of four uses, its final use being on the currently unique
BD-13 Large Eagle variety; this reverse die was also employed for
the rare BD-1 1798 variety. The present example of the BD-8 die
pairing is boldly and evenly struck, with just slight wear over the
central design elements. Both sides show unnaturally bright,
yellow-gold coloration with a slightly dusky hue, a product of the
well-executed repair work in the fields on both sides. A
still-pleasing coin to the unaided eye. From The Liberty USA Collection.
