Description
1977-D Kennedy Half, Mint State Details
Struck on a 40% Silver Planchet
1977-D 50C Kennedy Half Dollar -- Struck on a 40% Silver
Planchet, Cleaned -- NGC Details. Unc. 11.5 grams. A rare
transitional alloy mint error. 40% silver half dollars were struck
for Bicentennial collector sets, bearing dual 1776-1976 dates and a
reverse depicting Independence Hall. The 40% silver planchets were
never intended for circulation half dollars, let alone
post-Bicentennial issues with a heraldic eagle reverse. Our auction
archives show only seven prior appearances of silver 1977-D half
dollars. Luster is diminished by a past dip, but marks are
essentially limited to a narrow vertical line on Kennedy's
forehead.
