Description

Intriguing Uniface Obverse Die Trial

Pedro I copper Uniface Obverse Die Trial 80 Reis 1829-SP UNC, São Paulo mint, KM-Unl., cf. LMB-739 (for standard type), Bentes-485.03 (same). An intriguing survivor of the fleeting Sao Paulo mint, perhaps unique, showcasing chocolate brown surfaces with crisp devices. Though we haven't been able to find any information in regards to this issue, we've matched the die to three other examples of 1829-SP coins. The old flips that accompany it may help in future research for the next owner, since they describe how this type was struck in 1833 to be used as a comparative piece as a means to to distinguish regal examples from surfacing contemporary counterfeits. The second flip, a very old parchment envelope, has the following note in Portuguese: "Moeda que se refere o Officio de 2do comando que acompanhou a Portaria de 26 de M(aio / arço) de 1833". The note translates to "The coin mentioned in a statement by the Command who enforced the ordinance of M(arch or ay) of 1833."
