Description

1851-O Dime, Gem Mint State
Sole Finest in Combined Population

1851-O 10C MS65 NGC. Fortin-101. Attractively toned with considerable luster filtering through the green-gold, olive, and steel-gray hues across each side. The stars are crisply detailed, though die polish, likely intended to remove the obverse's still-heavy die rust, has removed some of the "low" elements in the drapery instead, particularly near the pole. Aside from a shallow mark across Liberty's cheek, there are surprisingly few marks of any size on either side.

Variety: Fortin-101, only one die pair known for the year for a mintage of 400,000 pieces.

Population Data (3/15): The only MS65 example recognized by either NGC or PCGS with none finer.

Heritage Commentary: Though 400,000 1851-O dimes were struck, virtually all of them went into commerce right away, and any Mint State example is a clear condition rarity. Gerry Fortin rates the 1851-O R.7 in Mint State. This is a staggering coinage figure for the single die pair believed known, though the rusted condition of the obverse die points to how it was used well past its expected life.

Consignor Commentary: If there is a sleeper in this series, a coin whose rarity in Gem grades goes unrecognized, the 1851-O is it.
