Description
1879 Seated Dime, PR68
A Top-Grade Example
1879 10C PR68 NGC. Fortin-102. Deep blue and purple tones
coalesce over each side and provide this Superb Gem proof with
undeniable appeal. Aside from trivial softness on the top-left corn
stalk, the strike is pinpoint-sharp. This is a seldom-offered
opportunity to obtain a top-grade example. Housed in a former
generation holder.Variety: Fortin-102, attributed by weakness on the base directly above 87 in the date.
Population Data (3/15): The finest graded are three PR68 at NGC and 10 PR67 at PCGS, excluding Cameos.
Heritage Commentary: Only 14,000 circulation strikes were manufactured in 1879, as declining silver prices resulted in an increase of previously hoarded silver coins into circulation. Demand, and therefore mintages, for new coins dropped between 1879 and 1881. A total of 1,100 proofs were struck in 1879, and examples are often sought-after as alternatives to the scarcer regular-issue coins.
Provenance: Purchased from Kevin Lipton (12/2006).(Registry values: N4719)
Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 23D4, PCGS# 4776, Greysheet# 4280)
Weight: 2.49 grams
Metal: 90% Silver, 10% Copper
