Description

1877 Trade Dollar, MS65
Major Rarity in Gem Condition

1877 T$1 MS65 PCGS. CAC. Dusky violet and steel-gray patina covers both sides of this Gem Trade dollar. The obverse shows softness on the stars and only minor weakness on Liberty's head (highly unusual for this issue). Conversely, the reverse is much better-defined, showing strong wing detail and minor incompleteness on the right claw. A thin die crack connects most of the reverse legends.

Population Data (9/15): PCGS reports 10 submissions in MS65 and two MS66 finer. NGC accounts for 11 in MS65 and one MS66 finer. This piece is among nine in this grade with the CAC green approval.

Heritage Commentary: Bowers' Silver Dollars and Trade Dollars of the United States: A Complete Encyclopedia remarks: "Despite its record high mintage for a Philadelphia coin of this denomination, the 1877 trade dollar is a major rarity in MS-65 grade." Examples are almost universally weakly struck on the obverse, though coins can occasionally be found with sharp reverse strikes, as is the case with this magnificent Gem.
