François I gold Ecu d'or au chevalier ND (1442-1450) UNC Details (Private Countermark) NGC, Rennes mint, Fr-95, PdA-1194, Dup-318, Boudeau-124, Bigot-1088, Jéz-385c. 3.39gm. +: FRΛnCISCVS: DЄI: GRΛ: BRITOnVm: DVX: R: (double mullet stops), François, crowned and armored on horseback, brandishing sword in right hand, and holding shield in left, advancing right / +: DЄVS: In: ΛDIVTORIVm: mЄVm: In: TΛnDЄ: R: (double mullet stops), cross fleuillue with each limb terminating in trefoil, ermines in angles, all within quatrefoil. A beautifully preserved representative aside from the private E countermark on the obverse, which may be a mark from a past collector. Minted on a pleasantly broad flan, a quick turn of the wrist reveals waves of shimmering golden backlight, confirming that this piece was carefully plucked from circulation not long after it was first issued.Metal: Gold
