Description

Attractive 1849-C Closed Wreath
Gold Dollar, MS63

1849-C G$1 Closed Wreath MS63 NGC. Variety 1. Though infinitely more collectible than its Open Wreath counterpart, the 1849-C Closed Wreath dollar is far from common, particularly in better grades. While the number of Mint State pieces in the combined certified population approaches 50, Doug Winter believes that a majority of these are resubmissions; in his 2008 edition of Gold Coins of the Charlotte Mint, he posits that only 10 to 15 distinct Uncirculated examples exist. This Select survivor has lovely luster, bright yellow-gold with considerable flashiness. The strike is pleasing, and while a number of fine abrasions are present on each side, no single flaw is particularly distracting. NGC shows just two numerically finer pieces in its Census Report (8/09).(Registry values: N7079)
