Description

1880-CC Half Eagle, MS61
Mint State Rarity

1880-CC $5 MS61 NGC. Variety 1-A. Any Carson City half eagle from this period is a rarity if found in Mint State. The 1880-CC is readily collectible in circulated grades, but only a few handfuls of Mint State pieces are known, mostly with unsightly abrasions. The finest is a single MS63 PCGS coin. The present MS61 NGC coin is representative of the grade usually encountered among Mint State pieces but nonetheless shows uncommonly strong eye appeal for this level. The strike is bold, and the satiny yellow-gold surfaces display vibrant mint luster. A few scattered ticks accompany handling marks in the obverse field, limiting the numeric grade but posing minimal visual distraction. Census: 12 in 61, 1 finer (7/16).
