Description
1844 Liberty Eagle, MS61
One of Two Mint State Pieces Known
1844 $10 MS61 NGC. With a small 6,361-coin mintage, the 1844
ten dollar is understandably rare. But it is far rarer than many
casual observers may realize. Across the entire decade, only the
1841-O has a lower mintage than the 1844 (2,500 coins), but the
Philadelphia issue prevails as the rarer of the two. NGC and PCGS
combined list 69 submissions of the 1844 eagle (7/16), including
possible resubmissions, and PCGS accurately estimates that only 50
to 75 examples are known in all grades. Of these, the present piece
is both the second-finest and one of only two coins known that are
Uncirculated. Housed in a prior generation holder, this mildly
abraded, sharp Condition Census coin displays satiny green-gold
luster with glints of semiprooflike mirroring in the fields. Eye
appeal exceeds expectations for the issue. Our previous offering of
this coin in 2002, where it realized more than $10,000, is the only
recorded prior auction appearance of a Mint State 1844 eagle.Ex: FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2002), lot 8226.
