Description

Scarce 1860-S Quarter, VF35

1860-S 25C VF35 PCGS. The 1860-S quarter is similar to most of the other S-mint denominations from this decade. The mintage was not notably low, in this case 56,000 pieces produced, but it was apparently calculated to fulfill the needs for regional commerce. Only 30 coins have been certified in all grades by both PCGS and NGC combined (8/08), and only one piece has been graded in mint condition (an NGC MS61). Most of the coins certified grade lower than this piece with the average grade only 21.2. Problem coins are also frequently seen on this issue. This is a problem-free coin for the grade. The devices show the usual softness that this issue is known for, and the high points are light rose-gray and contrast sharply against the deep charcoal gray seen in the fields and recesses of the design elements.
