Attractive Near-Mint 1846 Dime

1846 10C AU58 NGC. Though the 1844 received the catchy sobriquet of "Little Orphan Annie," numismatists today acknowledge the 1846 as the key to the Stars Obverse series of Seated dimes. With a mintage of 31,300 pieces, the 1846 is challenging in practically any grade, and as with most issues of the era, the population dwindles rapidly as one approaches Mint State. NGC has graded a mere two coins at this level, with none finer, while PCGS has certified just two Mint State pieces (6/07).
This well struck near-Mint example retains a degree of original luster at the margins, which show thin orange toning on the obverse and rich blue-green patina on the reverse. The centers are predominantly silver-gray, though a spot of amber is present within the wreath. Just the slightest trace of friction is present on the highpoints of this delightful and important piece.(Registry values: N1793)
