Description
Gould Inc. Prototype Dollar, Dies of Pollock-5425
(1976-1978) Gould Inc. Titanium MS66 NGC. Dies of Pollock-5425, Baker-B707B, R.7. Struck in pure nickel with a plain edge, 26.5mm. A nearly immaculate example of this interesting issue, untoned aside from a mere hint of chestnut color. The NGC insert asserts the alloy is nickel. The Pollock reference lists the present designs only in titanium alloy (Pollock-5425), although Pollock-5440, without the TITANIUM legend, is listed as pure nickel. In the mid-1970s, the U.S. Mint decided that the crown-sized Eisenhower dollar was too cumbersome to circulate readily, and planned its replacement with a smaller diameter dollar coin. This project eventually led to the Anthony dollar, but private companies contributed to the effort with private patterns of various alloys.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 2AMZ, PCGS# 62298, Greysheet# 15240)
