Scarce 1866-S No Motto Double Eagle, XF40

1866-S $20 No Motto XF40 PCGS. The 1866-S No Motto issue is one of the rarest of all of the Type One double eagles. The actual mintage figure is unknown, but Garrett and Guth estimate 120,000 pieces. This example is boldly struck, with relatively clean, evenly worn surfaces. The khaki-green coloration yields to strong red-orange luster remnants near the peripheries. Population: 22 in 40, 68 finer (5/09).
