Description

1857-D Gold Dollar, AU55
Winter: Most Underrated D-Mint Gold Dollar

1857-D G$1 AU55 NGC. Variety 9-L, the only variety of this year. Only 3,533 gold dollars were coined at the Dahlonega Mint in 1857. Approximately 120-130 examples are known today, with about three dozen survivors in AU grades. Doug Winter believes the issue is one of the two most underrated D-mint gold dollars, along with the 1850-D. The present coin shows little actual wear, but the striking details are weak throughout, as usually seen on this date. A curious oval of reddish color surrounds the central obverse devices and also colors the reverse borders. Census: 26 in 55, 41 finer (2/10).
