Description

1794 HEAD OF 1794 CENT, AU50
EQUAL TO THE FINEST GRADED S-35

1794 S-35 R5 AU50 PCGS. Choice glossy medium brown and light chocolate. Smooth and very attractive with a few minor marks including a collection of tiny ticks left of the upper lip and a minor rim bruise at the U in UNITED. LDS, Heck die state 8, Breen state VIII, with strong die cracks on the obverse plus the final lighter one from the cap through the curls to the shoulder loop. The die crack at the ear down into the neck is crumbled and very wide. This obverse die was shattered. Graded VF35 and tied for CC#2 in the Bland census (the superior EF45 and the VF35 that is tied with this piece are both in the ANS Collection making this example tied with one other for finest available to collectors according to the Bland census). Noyes says VF30 and CC#3, his photo #21497. This cataloger's EAC grade is VF30. One of the finer examples listed in the Noyes census is in the ANS Collection. A very impressive representative of this rare die variety, and it has a nice provenance. The attribution and Paschal-Husak-Boka provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; none finer. 35570.50/81233639.

Tom Morley
was born in Tawas City, Michigan, on March 9, 1936, and died in Florida on May 16, 2000. Morley was the author of 1794 Large Cents Graded and Updated in 1979. He cataloged the Nofal-Kling large cents in 1976 and the EAC Sale in 1979. He gained instant notoriety for purchasing several important 1794 cents in the Garrett sale, and leaving them in the back of a New York City taxicab. Fortunately for him and for numismatics, the cents were returned none the worse for wear.
