bruise under the 79, another barely visible one opposite the eye,
and a pair of small ticks at the N in CENT. M-LDS, Breen state III,
Heck 3 late, with clashmarks and fine die cracks on both sides, but
the latest die lines or cracks on the neck and in the field before
the portrait are very light. Obvious roughness from die degradation
or "spalling" shows on the reverse, particularly around the upper
half of the wreath. This cataloger's EAC grade is AU50 sharpness
net EF45. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection

The Superior Galleries Pre-Long Beach Elite Coin Auction of January 25-27, 2004, held in Beverly Hills, showcased an exceptional range of United States, world, and ancient numismatics. Anchored by notable consignments, the sale featured the Russian Classics Collection, spanning rare Tsarist coinage of the Romanov dynasty with pedigrees to major 20th-century auctions, and the Dry Tortugas Shipwreck Collection, with treasures excavated from a 1622 Spanish galleon. Other major highlights included the David Poole PCGS Registry Set of Lincoln cents, ranked among the finest ever formed; the Dr. Frederick Anderson Nevada Collection, emphasizing Carson City silver and gold with remarkable provenance; the Las Vegas Collection (Part One); the Columbia River Collection, rich in U.S. gold; the North East Collection of Type Coins and Patterns (Part Two); the La Jolla Collection of Seated Dollars; and the New York State Classic Rarity and Early Proof Silver Collection.
Organized into six sessions, the auction covered the entire spectrum of U.S. coinage from colonials and early copper through 20th-century issues, proofs, commemoratives, and gold, along with significant sections of world crowns, gold, and ancient coins. Shipwreck artifacts, patterns, territorial gold, and exonumia rounded out the offerings, making the event both broad and deep in scope. The catalog combined scholarly detail with broad collector appeal, and the diversity of collections-from pedigreed early copper to world-class Russian rarities-solidified the sale's reputation as one of Superior's most ambitious and wide-ranging auctions of the early 2000s.
