scuffed.Ex Bowers & Merena 11/18/1994:2030 ($1650)-COL Steven K. Ellsworth.
The 1994 Bowers and Merena auction of important properties from the Massachusetts Historical Society featured notable copper rarities. Among the most important was a 1793 Liberty Cap cent (Sheldon-14), certified EF40, which realized $24,750, reflecting both its rarity and pedigree. The sale included additional early cents from 1793 through the 1790s, many in high grades, along with Condition Census examples from later early date years.
Half cents and later coppers were also represented, though the strength lay in early federal issues. The catalog emphasized rarity, provenance, and the importance of institutional holdings now coming to market, making this sale a rare opportunity for copper specialists. While the auction featured spectacular rarities in silver and gold, the copper section was critical for early U.S. cent collectors, offering both scholarly depth and market excitement.
