1794 S-54 Head of 1794 Cent, VF35
Early Intermediate Die State

1794 1C S-54 R3 Head of 1794 VF35 PCGS. Mostly glossy olive brown and chocolate with steel brown toning on the highpoints. Reasonably smooth but there are traces of dark scale in protected areas on the reverse, mostly around ONE and the leaves to the right. The notable marks are a dull scrape in the field before the neck, a fine diagonal scratch in the field before the eyebrow, a diagonal nick under the ear lobe, and a small dig over the 9. The reverse is misaligned slightly off center to K-2 and RTY is softly struck, but everything else is strong. E-MDS, Breen state II, Heck state 1, with fine die clashmarks on the reverse but none on the obverse. This cataloger's EAC grade is VF30 net VF25. Noyes photo #66923. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS Gold Shield label (35624.35/15005062).
Ex 2003 EAC Sale, McCawley & Grellman Auctions 4/26/2003:297 ($2300)-COL Steven K. Ellsworth.

The 2003 Early American Coppers (EAC) Convention Sale, held April 26 at the Drawbridge Inn in Fort Mitchell, Kentucky, was anchored by important consignments from John Peters and Dr. William E. Hopkins, alongside additional contributions from other club members. The sale opened with colonial and token material, including standout Saint Patrick farthings, Connecticut and Vermont coppers, New Jersey issues, Fugios, and Talbot, Allum & Lee pieces, several representing newly identified or extremely rare die varieties. Hard Times tokens, British and counterfeit halfpence, and related exonumia added depth, reinforcing the EAC's traditional emphasis on scholarship and variety while also keeping material accessible for a wide range of collectors.

The copper core of the auction was especially memorable, beginning with the Peters half cents and extending through early date large cents. Half cents included notable 1794 and 1795 varieties, several with remarkable pedigrees, and a broad range of scarce 1804 die states, including multiple "Spiked Chin" examples in various conditions and progressions. The large cents section opened with strong 1793 Chain and Wreath pieces, continuing through early Liberty Caps, Draped Busts, and Classic Heads, with coins tied to Condition Census rankings and important provenances. Together, the offerings highlighted both rarity and die state research, underscoring the convention sale's dual role as a marketplace and scholarly reference point for the study of early American copper.
