Select Uncirculated 1918/7-S Standing Liberty Quarter

1918/7-S 25C MS63 PCGS. As with many of the more important Mint errors of the 20th century, the 1918/7-S was created by the rushed atmosphere the war created at the Engraving Department in Philadelphia. In this case, the obverse die in question received its first blow from a 1917-dated hub. After the annealing process, however, the die received the second blow from a 1918-dated hub. With an S mintmark affixed, the die was shipped west for use by the San Francisco Mint.
There is no way for us to discern exactly how many of the 11 million Standing Liberty Quarters produced in the San Francisco Mint during 1918 were delivered with this overdated obverse. Judging by the number of coins extant, the total must have been small. Furthermore, the error escaped the usually keen eyes of numismatists until 1937. In that year, a coin described as Brilliant Uncirculated appeared as lot 741 in Barney Bluestone's December 4 sale. That coin realized $26.25, an unheard of sum for the era. Due to the length of time that elapsed between production and discovery (19 years), the typical 1918/7-S Quarter available to today's collectors will be worn to one degree or another. The few Mint State coins that are extant are invariably poorly struck.
Although not full, the detail on the present example is not inadequate. True, Liberty's head and part of the shield detail is incomplete, but the balance of the devices display generally good detail. Neither side reveals any mentionable abrasions, and a thin overlay of golden-gray patina hardly subdues the underlying luster. All in all, this is an attractive, Select quality representative of this premier 20th century rarity. (#5726) (Registry values: P4, N14500)
