Description

1796 LIBERTY CAP CENT, MS61 BROWN
FINEST 1796 S-88
EX PROSKEY-HINES-DOWNING

1796 S-88 R4 Liberty Cap MS61 Brown PCGS. Frosty olive brown and steel. Satiny mint luster covers the fields and this cent has great eye appeal. The only defects (other than the usual microscopic planchet flakes) are a tick on the neck and a planchet chip in the dentils above the E in STATES (as struck). There are some tiny chips at EN in CENT but those letters are clear and everything else is bold. EDS, Breen state I, before any die cracks. An impressive cent, very close to mint state. Graded AU55 and finest known by a very wide margin in the Noyes census, his photo #20651. Bland says AU50 and CC#1 by 15 points. This cataloger's EAC grade is AU55. The obverse is plated in Dr. Sheldon's Early American Cents and Penny Whimsy, and both sides are plated in the 1991 Noyes reference. A piece for the finest collection. Comes with a very nice provenance. The attribution is noted on the PCGS Gold Shield label. PCGS population 1; none finer. 35771.61/40246170.

David Proskey
was born in Wappingers Falls, New York, on December 12, 1853, and died in North Caldwell, New Jersey, on August 16, 1928. After conducting a brief run of auctions, he joined Harlan Page Smith in the New York Coin and Stamp Company, handling many important collections including the Parmelee Collection in 1890. He also compiled a series of articles about large cents that were published in the Coin Collector's Journal. Lapp and Silberman note: "He was tall, straight, and wore a heavy beard. He was possibly the best informed man on the east coast in coins and in antiques in general; he was also an authority on postage stamps." John W. Adams described his abilities: "His numismatic knowledge was so broad, ranging from prehistoric to modern times and from South America to the Baltic Sea, that he was a frequent consultant to other dealers."
