1796 LIBERTY CAP CENT, MS63 BROWN
EQUAL TO FINEST SHELDON-90
EX FRENCH-GREEN-WHITNEY

1796 S-90 R5+ Liberty Cap MS63 Brown PCGS. Beautiful glossy light to medium brown with chocolate toning on the highpoints and on the right side of the reverse. Hints of underlying very faded mint color show in a few of the protected areas. No spots or roughness, and the eye appeal of this cent is outstanding. The only notable contact mark is a very light rim bruise at the first S in STATES. There are some of the usual tiny planchet chips, as struck. These include a small one at the dentils over I in LIBERTY and a collection of tiny chips on the left stem of the wreath. Otherwise the fields are smooth and the obverse fields are slightly reflective. EDS, Breen state I, with the reverse upset head-to-head and no trace of swelling in the center of the reverse. The devices are well struck and ONE CENT is bold. Tied for finest known of this rare variety in both census lists. Bland says MS60 while Noyes says MS60 net AU55, Noyes photo #33392. This cataloger's EAC grade is MS60. This cent is plated in the 1909 Gilbert-Elder reference on the cents of 1796. Comes with an impressive provenance that shows an unbroken line of ownership by prominent collectors for over 100 years. The attribution and Dan Holmes Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS Gold Shield label. PCGS population 1; none finer. 35777.63/13666680.

Edward Howland Robinson Green
was the son of Hetty Green, the "Witch of Wall Street." He was born in London on August 22, 1868, while his parents were on a European tour. His death occurred in Lake Placid, New York, on June 8, 1936. By all accounts, Hetty Green was quite miserly, and refused to hire a doctor to treat her son when he injured his leg. This action caused Green to lose his leg. He graduated from Fordham College in 1888 and was admitted to the bar. Green was active in politics for the Republican Party and chaired the Texas Republican State Committee. He was on the board of directors for the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair, served as a director of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, and was president of the Texas Midland Railroad. After his death in 1936, his coin collection was valued at $5 million and his stamp collection at $3.5 million.
