Description
1795 NC-3 Plain Edge Cent, Fair 2
Important "Non-Collectible" Cent
1795 1C NC-3 R7+ Plain Edge, ONE CENT Central, Fair-2 PCGS.
Glossy steel brown and light chocolate with darker olive brown
toning in some of the protected areas. Heavily worn with light
contact marks including a small rim nick off the chin and a small
planchet chip at the top of the reverse. The top of the 5 is clear
but the rest of the date is faint at best. The low C in CENT is
weak but visible and the leaf positions at ED are diagnostic. This
variety was unknown until it was discovered by Jack H. Beymer in
1979 and announced in Coin World in September 1980. Since then
several more have been found, all in low grade, and the current
total known to us is 7. Graded Fair-2 Choice and tied for CC#1 in
the Noyes census of 2(4)-1(2), his photo #32455. Bland says Fair-2
and CC#2 in his census of 3-2(2)-1. This cataloger's EAC grade
is Fair-2. Our census of all 7 examples is led by a VG10 net G4
that is rough and has a rather large curved planchet clip left of
the lower curls. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection
provenance are noted on the PCGS Gold Shield label

The Bowers and Merena November 18-19, 1993 sale of the Donovan and Hudgens Collections, held at the Grand Central Coin Convention in New York, presented two major cabinets with significant strength in early American copper. The Donovan Collection was especially rich in half cents and large cents, offering numerous Condition Census and choice examples spanning from the 1793 Chain and Wreath cents through later 19th-century issues. Standouts included a 1794 half cent in PCGS EF40, a 1797 C-1 die blunder variety, and an unusually high-grade 1803 half cent in AU50, alongside gem mid-19th-century pieces such as an 1833 MS65BN and an 1857 MS65RB. In large cents, highlights included a well-pedigreed 1794 S-57 "Pyramidal Head" cent in VF35, a glossy 1796 S-112 Draped Bust cent in VF20, and a sharply defined 1797 S-140 in EF45. Together, these coins reflected both rarity and remarkable quality for specialists in early copper.
The Hudgens Collection added further depth, featuring an array of early federal issues and specialized copper varieties that complemented Donovan's holdings. While not as concentrated in rarity as Donovan's cabinet, Hudgens's material provided breadth and collector appeal, with strong showings in middle- and late-date cents and supporting type material. Cataloged in Bowers' characteristic detailed style, the auction underscored the enduring importance of the 1793-1857 copper series, emphasizing not only rarity but also die states, condition, and aesthetic appeal. With many coins tracing pedigrees to earlier luminaries and backed by strong prices realized, the Donovan and Hudgens sale remains a noteworthy event in the 1990s copper market, preserving both quality coins and important provenance for future study.
