Maximilian Peso 1866-Mo UNC Details (Cleaned) NGC, Mexico City mint, KM388.1. Large letters type. Out of the thousands graded by NGC, this piece is among the higher ranks of the certified population, elevated further by the vibrant patina radiating from its fields.

Maximilian I, an Austrian archduke from the notorious House of Habsburg, was crowned as Emperor of Mexico on April 10th, 1864. His political perspectives and foreign presence was greatly opposed by the Mexican public, specifically the liberal forces led by Benito Juárez. After his control started to weaken with the departure of the French forces, he was captured, tried, and executed by firing squad in 1867, just three short years after he was crowned emperor. According to an article called Execution of Maximilian I, Emperor of Mexico (1867) by Scott Mehl, Maximilian's last words are reportedly "I forgive everyone and ask everyone to forgive me. May my blood which is about to be shed, be for the good of the country. Viva Mexico!".
