Description

EASTERN EUROPE. Uncertain Celtic Tribe. Ca. 4th-3rd centuries BC. AR tetradrachm (25mm, 13.47 gm, 6h). NGC VF 5/5 - 4/5, edge marks. Imitating types of Philip II of Macedon, copying Amphipolis. Laureate head of Zeus right / ΦIΛIΠ-ΠO[-Y?], nude youth seated on horse trotting right, reins in left hand, palm in right; Λ above torch below horse. Lanz -, cf. 356 (complete legend, Γ monogram between forelegs). Cf. Classical Numismatic Group, Electronic Auction 274 (22 February 2012), lot 207 for same type. Note, unclear if symbol between forelegs is a Y or a monogram.
