The Gupta Empire formally began with the issuance of a unique gold coin type during the rule of Chandragupta I, who was the grandson of the dynasty's founder. This monarch adopted the resplendent title of "the Great King of Kings" (Maharajadhiraja), effectively declaring the establishment of an empire under his dominion. The early Gupta political aspirations are vividly captured on these illustrious gold dinars, not just in the depictions of the royal couple but also in the reverse legends with the reference to the Queen Kumaradevi's Lichchhavis clan, which highlights the strategic matrimonial alliance aimed at territorial expansion in northeastern India.
