Description

Borderline Uncirculated 1861-S Twenty

1861-S $20 AU58 NGC. Ex: S.S. Republic. The reverse has essentially full luster, and obverse luster is also substantial. Friction is difficult to locate on the devices, and the fields have unexpectedly few marks. Although the most desirable 1861-S variety is, of course, the famous Paquet Reverse, the present piece is also interesting for its die characteristics. A lengthy straight die line, approximately five centimeters in length, traverses much of the right (facing) wing, beginning from the right shield border. Plumage detail is absent near the base of the die line, which suggests that the die line was created at the same time the die was lapped, presumably to remove clash marks that are nonetheless evident above the ear lobe. A presentation case, booklet, and DVD from Odyssey Marine Exploration accompanies the lot.
