Description

Victoria gold "S.S. New York" Sovereign 1838 AU50 NGC, KM736.1, S-3852, Marsh-22 (R). Salvaged from the "S.S. New York" (sunk in 1846 off the coast of Galveston, Texas). The first Sovereign date marking Victoria's distinguished reign, which inaugurated one of the most collectable series in all of world numismatics.

The S.S. New York was a 160 foot steamship built in 1837 that soon found itself traversing the route between Galveston and New Orleans. With a weekly schedule, the New York's cabin ticket price was $15, considered by many to be a luxurious ride complete with stained glass windows, porcelain dinnerware, and mahogany walls. The steamship would depart for its last voyage on September 5th, 1846, from Galveston, then part of the Republic of Texas. Unfortunately, by the early hours of September 7th, the New York had sailed directly into a hurricane's path, just 50 miles from departure. Of the 53 on board 17 perished, and the cargo of approximately $40,000 in gold, silver, and bank notes was lost to the Gulf. Forgotten until 1990, an amateur diver used data from Gulf shrimpers to explore locations of net hangs which led to the New York's discovery. Curious pieces have been salvaged, including issues from the scarce U.S. mints of Charlotte and Dahlonega, and several foreign gold coins.
