Description
1859-S Double Eagle, MS61
Seldom Offered in Mint State
1859-S $20 MS61 PCGS. The 1859-S Liberty double eagle is
often available in circulated grades, but in the years following
the Gold Rush in California few high-grade double eagles were
spared commercial use, resulting in the rarity of Mint State
examples today. This piece is in a grade that we have rarely seen
at auction, and we have handled a higher-grade piece on only a few
occasions in recent years. Luster is frosty and abundant, yielding
original green-gold and peach-yellow hues over boldly struck design
elements. Scattered abrasions dictate the grade, but this 1859-S
double eagle displays uncommonly strong eye appeal for the MS61
level. Population: 26 in 61, 16 finer (5/20).(Registry values: N4719)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 269C, PCGS# 8928, Greysheet# 9896)
Weight: 33.44 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
