Description

Elusive Early Die State 1799 B-18, BB-154 Variety

1799 $1 Normal Date. B-18, BB-154, R.4--Whizzed--NCS. VF Details. Right edge of E over center of highest curl; Small point or spike at end of stem. Reiver die state a. Bowers-Borckardt die state I. This coin was used for the plate coin obverse and reverse of the Reiver Early Dollar book. Curiously, this is the rare early reverse die state with no evidence of the crack through ED towards the eagle's head. The surfaces have been artificially brightened and remain untoned. Moderate surface scratches and nicks are seen with a loupe, as well as a couple of rim nicks. A well struck coin that could stand a little color reflective of its proper age. Perhaps half a dozen examples are known of this early die state. One of the most difficult varieties of the year to locate, and a coin which should be considered by the specialist. Identifiable by a tiny scratch in the upper portion of the N and another between ED of UNITED.
