Description

Augustus (27 BC-AD 14). AR denarius (21mm, 3.49 gm, 7h). NGC XF 5/5 - 4/5. Uncertain Spanish mint (Colonia Caesaraugusta?), ca. 19-18 BC. Laureate head of Augustus left / CAESAR / AVGVSTVS, two laurel trees/branches. RIC I 33b. Splashes of aqua, peach, and violet toning.

Ex Robert W. Hubel Collection (acquired in the 1930s).

The trees featured on this reverse type are a representation of the laurel trees gifted to Octavian by the Senate when they bestowed the title of Augustus upon him. They were planted on either side of the entrance gate to his home on Palatine.
