Naples. Alfonso I of Aragon (1442-58) gold Ducato e mezzo ND, Fr-816, Biaggi-1662, MIR-53, MS64 NGC. + • ALFOnSV • D • G • R • ARAGO • SICILI • CITR • VLTR, quartered arms of Hungary, Jerusalem, Aragon, and Naples / + • DnS • M • ADIVT • ЄT ЄGO • DЄSPICI • InMICO •, armored knight on horseback with sword raised riding right. A phenomenally preserved example of this scarce type. The strike is a touch weak in the centers with slight double-striking in the legends. The surfaces are nearly free of marks and very lustrous. Alfonso was the first of the Aragonese rulers of Naples. He took the city after an eight-month siege and obtained papal consent to pass the kingdom on to one of his illegitimate sons, who would reign as Ferdinando I following his death in 1458.Metal: Copper-Nickel
