Description

1794 S-44, B-33 Cent, AU55
The Norweb Specimen

1794 1C Head of 1794 AU55 ★ NGC. S-44, B-33, R.1. Our EAC Grade XF40. Ex: Mervis Collection. Breen Die State I. The obverse is cracked through the date and along the edge of the cap. No clash marks are noted on the reverse of this earliest die state. A pleasing chocolate-brown example with smooth surfaces that show only trivial circulation marks on each side. This common variety has a surprisingly low condition census. A single Mint State coin is known, followed by five coins grading XF45 and 10 XF40 pieces according to Noyes. Bland also lists a single Mint State coin, followed by three he grades AU50 and eight that he calls XF45. Noyes records this coin from the Norweb Collection as the seventh finest known to him, and Bland grades this piece XF45 and tied for fifth finest known.
Ex: A.H. Baldwin & Sons, Ltd. (London, 4/14/1960); Mrs. R. Henry Norweb (Bowers and Merena, 11/1988), lot 2713; Anthony J. Terranova (1/30/1989); Daniel W. Holmes, Jr. (Goldberg Coins, 9/2009), lot 71; Walter J. Husak; Greg Hannigan.
