Early Die State; Unsplit Pole

1794 1C Head of 1794 -- Burnished -- NGC Details. Fine. S-66, B-58, R.5. Our EAC Grade VG10. Ex: Mervis Collection. Breen Die State I. This is Sheldon's "Split Pole" variety with a die crack from the border to the lower edge of the pole, first appearing in Die State II. This earlier die state has a perfect obverse with no evidence of that die crack. Both sides have an attractive blend of olive and steel-brown with smooth surfaces showing the usual scattered marks for the grade. This piece is recorded as VG10 and fifth finest in the Bland census, and VG10 and sixth finest in the Noyes census.
