Exemplary PR66 Deep Cameo 1882 Trade Dollar

1882 T$1 PR66 Deep Cameo PCGS. The Trade dollar was unpopular with the general public in 1882, who remembered that those stuck with examples could only receive bullion value for them. It was a different story for collectors of the day, who pursued the run of proof-only dates that began in 1879 (the 1878 was proof-only, but the 1878-S Trade dollar was plentiful). Proof set mintages dropped in 1884 once the proof Trade dollar was no longer offered. The present piece helps explain the perennial popularity of the proof type. Frosted devices contrast with the darkly mirrored fields. The strike is exacting, and light golden toning further confirms the originality. Population: 4 in 66 Deep Cameo, 0 finer (8/08).(Registry values: P1)
