1928-S 5C MS67 ★ NGC. This is the sole finest 1928-S nickel in the combined certified population (6/09), and it looks every bit the Superb Gem. While David Lange's Complete Guide to Buffalo Nickels notes that the majority of 1928-S nickels show "a general softness in the date, the mintmark and the bison's forehead," this piece's detail is sharp and excellent throughout. Brightly lustrous, exquisitely preserved surfaces are awash in colorful toning, gold and pink at the centers with pale blue at the fringes.
