Description

Judd-2182 Martha Washington 'Nickel' MS61

Undated Martha Washington 'Nickel,' Judd-2182, R.8, MS61 NGC. 5.0 gm, identical to the weight of a typical Jefferson nickel. Struck in nickel with a plain edge. Unlisted in Pollock, who describes only dime-sized, quarter-sized, and half dollar-sized pieces from similar "nonsense" dies struck in 1965. The alloy of the five cent piece has remained unchanged since 1866, with the exception of the 1942 to 1945 "War nickels." USPatterns.com speculates that Judd-2182 was produced circa 1985 to test the Schuler coin press. Like all known examples of Judd-2182, the initials of Edward Groves are beneath the bust, and the tree touches the A in WASHINGTON. An untoned piece with scattered minute marks that in most cases were likely present on the planchet prior to the strike.
