Severus Alexander (AD 222-235). AV aureus (19mm, 6.11 gm, 7h). Rome, AD 230. IMP SEV ALE-XAND AVG, laureate head of Alexander right, slight drapery on left shoulder / P M TR P VIIII COS III P P, Romulus, radiate, wearing tunic and sagum (military cloak), walking right, carrying spear and trophy. RIC 103. Calicó 3121 (same dies). A splendid aureus in an absolutely perfect state of preservation. NGC Gem MS 5/5 - 5/5, Fine Style.Gem MS is the highest grade NGC assigns to ancient coins. The type, depicting Romulus in military dress (or probably Alexander himself as Romulus), likely refers to preparations for war against the new Sasanid dynasty in Persia, which had launched aggressive attacks against Rome's eastern provinces.
