Description

Pleasing 1793 Chain AMERI. Cent

1793 Chain 1C AMERI. VF Details NCS. VG8 EAC. S-1, Die State II, R.4. Previously certified VG8 by ANACS. First design for the large cent and the only variety with the famous AMERI. reverse, making it a very popular coin for copper specialists and for general U.S. type collectors alike. This is a pleasing coin for the grade that shows only a few pinscratches on the obverse, one traversing the center of that side, and all nicely blended with the color so that they are nearly invisible. There is also a small rim bump below the 3 in the date. The reverse is much finer, as always, with only a few small abrasions and bumps. There are only a few surviving Chain AMERI cents without problems. The current rarity ratings suggest that between 150 and 200 of these Sheldon-1 cents survive today. Breen speculates that some 6,350 pieces were struck; most are found in lower grades and with more problems than seen here. All discussions of "mintage figures" for the early cents through 1814 are taken from Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of Early United States Cents that was edited by this cataloger and published in 2000. Breen based all of his mintages on a combination of current rarity ratings with an estimated survival rate, in the range of 3% for these earliest years. Not all early copper specialists subscribe to these figures. This is a more than acceptable coin with nice detail. NCS Corroded.
