Description
1808 Half Cent, MS64 Brown
C-3 Normal Date
Lustrous and Smooth
1808 1/2 C C-3, B-3, R.1, MS64 Brown NGC. CAC. Manley Die
State 4.0. Cohen-3 is its own Guide Book variety, as the only
non-overdate 1808 die pair. It is not exactly a normal date,
however, since the second 8 was created by stacking two 0s with the
punch for the fraction denominator. This action implies that the
180 digits were entered first, then the obverse die was shelved.
When it was taken from the shelf at a later time, the 8 punch was
apparently unavailable, prompting the substitute. This high-quality
example displays lavender and fire-red coloration. The reverse
displays considerable brick-red, though the obverse toning denies a
Red and Brown designation. Marks are inconsequential, and carbon is
mostly limited to a narrow arc between S OF AM. Our EAC grade MS62.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 26Y2, Variety PCGS# 35206, Base PCGS# 1107, Greysheet# 80901)
Weight: 5.44 grams
