Description

1652 Pine Tree Shilling, MS62
Noe-8.2: Large Planchet, Ligatured NE

1652 Pine Tree Shilling, Large Planchet, Ligatured NE, Noe-8.2, W-740, Salmon 7-E, R.6, MS62 NGC. CAC. No Pellets at Trunk. 72.24 gn. A fully lustrous example with unblemished surfaces that are originally toned in apple-green, lilac, and tan-gold. The devices display splendid detail, especially on the tree. All peripheral legends are intact aside from the tops of the HVS in MASATHVSETS, absent due to a straight mint-made clip. Another mint clip near 3 o'clock removes a few beads but does not affect any letters. Practically all Massachusetts silver coinage has mint clips, in order to bring the weight of the piece within standards. A wave across the tree to 4:30 and a second wave on the reverse near 6 o'clock are also as made, due to the rocker press employed in its manufacture.

The Pine Tree was the third and final tree used on Massachusetts coinage, after the Willow and Oak Tree coinage. The Shilling denomination is further divided into two types: the Large Planchet and Small Planchet, with the changeover occurring in 1675 to improve die life. Among the 11 major varieties recognized by PCGS and 16 total varieties, the present Noe-8.2 is known as the 'Ligatured NE' variety, which fuses the right upright of the N in NEW with the upright of the E. Listed on page 9 of the 2026 Guide Book.
Ex: FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2009), lot 3539.
