Description
1787 Fugio Cent, MS65 Red and Brown
Newman 8-X, Bank of New York Hoard
Tied for Finest at PCGS
1787 FUGIO Fugio Cent, STATES UNITED, 4 Cinquefoils, Pointed
Rays MS65 Red and Brown PCGS. Newman 8-X, W-6750, R.3. This
late-die-state specimen has a heavy die crack from the lower
obverse border with the die bulged left of the crack, obliterating
part of the motto MIND YOUR BUSINESS. Clash marks are also
evident. The Newman 8-X figured prominently in the Bank of New York hoard of Fugio cents, with 189 examples found in the hoard, more than 10% of the 1,641 coins therein. This example ranks among the finest, with substantial orange luster and light brown toning. Carbon spots and planchet rifts are minimal. This piece is tied with eight others as the finest Red and Brown example that PCGS has examined (9/20). Listed on page 89 of the 2021 Guide Book.
