Description

Ideally Struck and Perfectly Centered "Defiant Snake" Durango Hookneck

Republic "Hookneck" 8 Reales 1824 Do-RL MS64 NGC, Durango mint, KM376.2, Elizondo-175, DP-Do01. Defiant snake, small Libertad variety. A coin which even on close inspection leaves little doubt in the viewer's mind to its utter singularity. While deemed by Dunigan and Parker as a scarce, yet attainable date in grades through XF, to locate a specimen in peak certification is simply an occasion that never occurs, as is well indicated by the fact that this very piece has been off the market for over 13 years. Though admitting the standard weakness to the eagle's breast feathers that is a nearly ubiquitous feature of the type, any underexpression of detail in the design essentially ends there, each letter, ray, and feather cut with the utmost precision and attention to detail, all while thick die polish resides in firmly lustrous and practically Prooflike fields. The strike further benefits from ideal centering--by no means a guarantee in this series--allowing the inner border to act as a perfect frame for the central motifs. Even with one example of this mint-date ranking finer, none surpass this rendition for the variety, making this a singular opportunity before the offering disappears from the market for likely decades to come.
